Gobbledok .. Chippies! Smiths Chips

“Chippie Chippie Chippie” … Bring back memories?
What a funny character, but a clever advertising one too!

Gobbledok Poster Do the Dok

The Gobbledok grabbed my attention, Im sure he made me buy more Smith’s chips.

I scored this poster (right) in the late 80’s from a local milk bar in Ringwood Victoria, it used to go above the chips display rack.  Asking the milk bar owner politely if I could have it when they were done with it, and here it is, still have it today. Looks like a few break dancers on potato planet Dok, doing “The Dok” .. WTF?

Well, sales of chips for Smiths increased with the launch of this lil fella that was only supposed to be a one-of for a commercial shoot to promote the new “Fresh Seal” (foil lining) packets.. this is when I began collecting chip packets.GobbleDok Smiths Chips Milk Bar Signs

    Hi Peter!

Love the site. I’m a 38 year old and love nothing more than nostalgia and looking back at the things we had growing up.

I’m now teaching graphic design at a humble TAFE (NMIT) and I’m wanting to set a project for the students to design their own potato chip packages, with a nod back to old chip packets to more recent ones.

    For the images on:

    and

Would you be able to provide higher resolution scans the students could refer to, to be able to see the finer details of the graphics and typography?

That would be fantastic if you could. Of course, I’ll be sure to get the students to visit your site 🙂

Hi Alex, thanks for dropping by, glad you enjoyed it.
Sure. I will send you an e-mail with some images of these chip packets for the students.
Sounds like a great project, the results would be great to see.

I found this old chip packet. Can you tell me how old it is? Is it worth anything?

Hi Kerrie, great lil find, did you find it under a house, I have had luck finding many under houses?
This is from late 70’s to early 80’s, I have a poster that depicts this packet, it was pre GobbleDok days, the packet changed slightly for the Gobbledock poster, one noticeable part is the stars on the top.
This packet in it’s condition is worth around $10, if you are interested in selling, I would buy it from you… thanks for sharing. Here is a link to that poster. Smiths Chips 70's Poster
