Some call em Cobbers, Victorians call them Mates..
Whatever you call them they are yummy..
Dentists must make a fortune from the sale of these lollies.
They were pretty hard toffee and when you chewed it, it would soften in the warmth of your mouth and pull at your teeth… I know that after eating a few Mates lollies, your jaw would feel a tad sore.
These images come from a photograph I took, of a box of these lollies I bought back in the 80’s, and I happened to keep the packaging. Classic Lolly display card.
Fyna now owns the Craig & Hales brand and makes Mates under both the Fyna and Craig & Hales names. Cobbers are made by Allens and are basically a Mates rip off as Craig & Hales were the first to make them. Allens slogan for Cobbers is THEIR GREAT MATE.
